Artist Spotlight - Ryan Calloway

I was in Ryan's studio almost a month ago when he showed me the beginnings of this sculpture. Calloway refers to himself as an artisan blacksmith, a title rightly claimed after years working of with a traditional forge in a sweltering workshop. I watched as he fired a piece of steel in a red hot oven, then hammered the metal on an anvil and quenched it in water, creating a cloud of steam. Then, back to the forge to start over. The base of this three foot tall hand forged cattail sculpture is a set of metal "rocks" that sit atop a platform of water ripples.

You can see this sculpture, as well as a selection of handmade artisan brooms created by Ryan Calloway at Village Gallery this month. For more information about this or any other work at Village Gallery, please contact us!
